Only Americans should vote in American elections.
This has never before been a controversial statement. In fact, an overwhelming majority of Americans full-heartedly agree with it.
So why is there a big push in 2024 to allow non-citizens to vote in America’s elections?
Partisan political gain? Extreme ideology? Your guess is as good as any, but with roughly 10 million illegal immigrants entering the United States under President Biden’s watch and the administration opposing attempts to require proof of citizenship to vote, Congress shouldn’t let its guard down and leave the voting booth susceptible to illegal voting as well.
With some cities and states trying to open the door to non-citizen voting, it’s up to legislators to securely shut it. And it’s imperative that Congress put protections into place that prevent illegal immigrants from accessing federal ballots.
So far, 11 states have explicitly prohibited non-citizens from voting in state and local elections, and eight more states will put the ban on the ballot this November to allow (citizen) voters to decide the issue.
And this week, the U.S. House of Representatives took the important step of passing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The SAVE Act would require states to obtain proof of citizenship when someone registers to vote in federal elections. If states fail to obtain said proof, new penalties will be added and citizens will have the ability to bring civil suits against election officials.
As Opportunity Solutions Project CEO Tarren Bragdon noted in a statement, “Every non-citizen allowed to vote dilutes the power of citizens’ votes—this is a harmful and morally wrong message to send to the American people…The SAVE Act should have unanimous support—the only reason to oppose this simple bill is tacit support of non-citizens voting in federal elections.”
States have worked diligently over the past three years to safeguard their elections against ranked-choice voting, Zuckerbucks, ballot shenanigans, and other undue influence. Leaving federal elections susceptible to non-citizen voting would undo all this hard work and risk election integrity and voter confidence.
Now it’s time for the Senate to act.
