A recent poll released this week found that voters of all major political affiliations in Minnesota’s seventh district are overwhelmingly in favor of six key welfare reform measures presented in the 2018 Farm Bill. The poll, conducted by Opportunity Solutions Project (OSP), found that voters particularly support reforms that promote the dignity of work, preserve the integrity of welfare programs, and prevent welfare fraud in order to preserve resources for truly needy individuals.

The poll found that 76% of voters support requiring able-bodied, working-age adults to work or participate in a job training program at least part-time in order to receive food stamps. 83% of voters, including 78% of democrats, want states to implement data-sharing to help stop fraudulent benefit collection in multiple states simultaneously.

In addition, the poll found that:

  • 82% of voters support efforts to combat welfare fraud that limit the number of times an individual can request an EBT card replacement without review
  • 78% of voters want states to check the assets of individuals applying for food stamps
  • 76% of voters want child support enforcement for food stamp recipients
  • 72% of voters believe that states should eliminate work-requirement waiver loopholes in counties with less than ten percent unemployment

“The results of this poll prove that Americans from coast to coast believe in the power and dignity of work,” said Kristina Rasmussen, Vice President of Federal Affairs for OSP. “Voters in district seven were clear-they want to see action to end the devastating cycle of government dependency and a focus on restoring the integrity of our welfare system.”
